Grammatical Errors on Social Media Posts
We all already knew that globalization has influenced many things, including ourselves, which also lead into a future progress of the world's civilization. We will found some people, instead of reading their newspaper while mingle on a coffee shop, they scrolling through touchscreen of their smartphones to get the most updated news of the day.
Using a social media is also an impact of globalization. Almost every single human on our planet, have at least one social media. People interested on using them because they can do almost anything there: play some online games, chatting with friends, and posting their thoughts about everything on it.
But, we need to remind ourselves that not all people use proper language when sharing their thoughts on social media. It could be a little bit unpleasant to see something's not right on your news feed, right? You want to tell them about the proper way to write some words, punctuation doesn't put on the right place, and so on. It cringes your mind, but you can't do anything (yes, it happens to me, a lot).
I wrote this not because I want to tell you to make them realize how wrong their words are. I only want to show some examples of social media posts, with grammatical errors in it.
I found something when I checked on one of my friend's social media post. Since it's kind of impolite to put their post on my blog and telling everyone about their real names and display photos to everyone, I'm gonna cover it to keep their privacy off from irresponsible people out there.
#1 Example
As you can see here, there are some grammar mistakes on this post. The first one is punctuation. Instead of writing those entire sentences without putting any commas on it, we can just write it down like this:
"Look, friends and family, please don't say a word on here, but text my cell. Give me ya full name, please. My cell broke, so I transferred my number to a new cell, so I lost everyone's number, all my contacts. So, help me out."
Looks better, right?
The next thing is the words. You can see some words are written not properly and could lead into some misunderstanding if people who read it didn't understand what they really mean.
Instead of writing "ya", you could say it as "you".
About the "cell" word. He/She mean to say his/her cellphone. But, other people might see it as another form of cell. Such as prison cell, human body cell, any cell you might think.
Another thing is the word "number". Do we understand what this word really mean? Yes, but some people don't. It's better to use "phone number". It sounds clearer and easy to understand.
#2 Example
Punctuations, words, there's not even a single comma on it, and so on.
The first one is the word "nothing" on the first line. It supposed to be "nothing is" or just "nothing's", there should be a predicate between "nothing" and "better". Because it's telling how could "nothing" is "better".
The next one is the word "then". I still don't understand WHY people keep using this word instead of using "than".
"THEN" means "the next thing/the next time"
"THAN" means "more of"
The other things is some words written not in proper way, apostrophe needed in the word "cant", and the space between "any" and "thing". For the last one, he/she is not wrong, but it could be better to write it down as "anything".
So, in my opinion, this post could be more pleasant to read if it's written down like this:
"Nothing's better than camping. Cold beer, hamburgers and smoked hotdogs, fresh off the fire. Can't ask for anything better."
I knew, people using social media without thinking the proper way to write their posts because they didn't really think if their post is going to be read by many people in the world. Some of them just neglecting the proper way to use words on it. It doesn't really matter as long as people understand their posts, they said. The other reason is that social media posts are tend to be informal. People are not going to correct your grammar easily, because they also wrote their posts not in proper way. They called it as "feedback".
I'm going to remind you once again, people do have rights to post whatever they like on their social media. As reader, we should understand this. Don't judge people easily only because they did not check their grammar every time they post something. Be a wise reader, be a good writer.
See you on the next post ;)
